Most orthodontic treatment is done using a fixed straight-wire appliance to gradually shift your teeth into their optimal position. Brackets are bonded onto the teeth, and then connected with an orthodontic wire which then moves the teeth.
At Stephen Chimes Dentistry the length of your orthodontic treatment will vary depending on your individual circumstance and the severity of varies issues such as crowding, spacing and jaw alignment. Typically treatment last from 9-24 months however for expecially difficult cases it may be longer.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment is not only aesthetic. Correct tooth and jaw alignment creates what is known as an ‘even bite’. As a result pressure from talking, chewing, and biting is divided evenly throughout the jaw and results in less stress to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) which connects the upper and lower jaw. In turn this makes it less likely to develop TMJ Dysfunction which can result in jaw, neck and back pain as well as headaches.
We also offer cosmetic brackets which are made of porcelain. These are a popular option as they are less aesthetically conspicuous as traditional fixed appliance braces because they can be technically coloured to match your existing teeth to project a more natural appearance.
